AFC Wimbledon were handed a sobering 3–0 defeat by Championship side Millwall in their penultimate pre-season friendly — or as Wombles Had a Dream might call it, the death of all hope, the collapse of civilisation, and the reason they won’t be renewing their season ticket (again).

But let’s take a breath, shall we? It was Millwall. They’re a full division above and came at us with a squad that included actual grown-up footballers. We, meanwhile, fielded a team containing two Trialists, and a sprinkling of new faces still learning each other’s names.

But, it’s a friendly. It’s pre-season. It’s not that deep.

Unless you’re reading WUP, in which case you’ve already declared us relegated and renamed the Phoenix pub “The Relegation Arms.”

Let’s wait until the real stuff starts before we start burning our new home shirt in protest. Or at least let’s get through the first week of August.

Bring on the season. Or at least, bring on a team who aren’t in the division above.
