AFC Wimbledon Players as 00’s Indie Bands (Part One)
Part One - Don’t believe the hype.
Once upon a time, the NME was the holy scripture of youth. Every week it ordained a new set of scruffy lads with guitars as the saviours of British music.
The Libertines, The Kooks, Wombats, Futureheads. All hailed as messiahs in skinny jeans, “the future of British music.” Now it didn’t turn out exactly like that. But that hype, that delusion, is exactly what makes it a perfect fit for Plough Lane.
So this is where we slot our squad into the indie band world. Not as parody, but as a form of historical record.
Nathan Bishop - Razorlight
Strong debut energy, flashes of brilliance, but distribution wobbles feel like Johnny Borrell’s ego mid-set.
Jake Reeves - Arctic Monkeys
Captain, evolution, still dictating the tempo like Alex Turner.
Danilo Orsi - The Ting Tings
Goes missing, then suddenly everyone’s singing his name. Pure streaky striker energy.
Omar Bugiel - Kasabian
Swaggering chaos, adored by the fans. When it clicks, it’s unstoppable.
Marcus Browne - Jamie T
South London cult flair. Disappears for spells, then returns with bangers.
Johnnie Jackson - Jay Jay Pistolet
Earnest and often overlooked, but with potential if the pieces fall into place. Like Jay Jay Pistolet before he morphed into The Vaccines, JJ feels one step away from a bigger stage. Given the right backing, the right line-up, and suddenly he’s not just keeping the beat, he’s headlining.
Now, what does the Dons Trust Board make of all this? Predictably, they’ve formed a working group. Angus is demanding we hold three Special General Meetings to determine whether Franz Ferdinand are truly post-punk or just pretentious Scots in blazers. Minutes to follow in 3 months, heavily redacted.
So there they are: our headline acts, our hyped-up poster boys. Some live up to it, some don’t, but that’s the thrill. The NME promised us world-beaters, we got Razorlight. League One promises us mediocrity, and we still turn up for the chaos. Don’t believe the hype but do buy the ticket.
Part 2 coming soon.
